The image is about 2.5" x 3.5" on 7" x 5" paper.
Even beat up, end of season, trodden on 4 leaf clovers are lucky. This one was painted in several layers, to add depth to the crisp autumn details. Even though this clover is obviously from the end of summer, it is still beautiful, vibrant, and alive. I even used water from the vase holding the lucky little model, just in case there's anything to this good luck stuff.

This little kalanchoe was a bargain succulent from the home improvement store. It thrives on a windowsill, receiving the occasional splash of used paint water. It is hidden from my fussing fingers by a barrier of bigger, safe to chew, plants placed there for our grazing cat (the things we do to have cats and houseplants coexist). It has proven to be a rather independent little organism, which is unexpected for a potted plant! But really, who wouldn't want to be independent, no matter where they end up?
Read More The painting is about 4.5" x 2.5" on 5" x 7" cardstock. It is painted on watercolor greeting card paper - I prefer to use them like time capsules, tucking a little note about our lives into the fold before framing the painting.
This was a study in geometric balance and organic contrasts. It was gently painted with brilliant crimson, fiery orange, and a touch of yellow, contrasted with pond green and storm blue. The process made a pleasing painting with a nice sense of light and growth. I don't think I could ever reproduce it exactly, because watercolors do what they please! |
